    NOTES & BASIC IDEAS
The cycle of think-feel-choose is what shapes your identity
Thoughts are like trees - with new experiences and memories they expand and grow
There is no normal brain, and the whole mental health movement is focused on diagnosing “illnesses” without considering each individual story
The large waves out at sea are delta waves
Waves closer to the beach not as big as delta are theta waves (unconscious mind)
Waves closer to the beach not as big as theta are alpha waves
Waves closer than alpha with the white crest are high beta waves
The little ripple onto the beach is gamma waves
Gamma and beta are most associated with consciousness
Alpha allows you to access deep-sea waves while being aware of shallow waves
Mind management ("thought autopsy") - 1) messy write out thoughts, 2) analyze thoughts for patterns, 3) choose action based on patterns
It takes about 3 weeks to build a long-term memory (a "tree" with information and emotions)
It takes about 9 weeks to turn long-term memory into usable memory (a habit)
It takes at least 2 to 3 months to change your identity
When the identity of your deep mind starts changing, it may be months before you see or feel it happening
With emotionally charged mental health work (trauma, identity, etc) spending only 7-30 minutes a day is best
Thoughts are physical things that occupy mental real estate like a house occupies land
Change can occur soon with the right work, but it takes months for the proteins to stabilize in the brain

Yessss!!! The tree is an actual structure. Dr. Leaf, you are wonderful. I have MS, that went undiagnosed for way too many years. I experienced what they thought was TMI in the 1970's, (yes I am older than dirt). I did not have the choice to not get back my functioning, to some extent, being the mother of two small children. I told my doctors I did not believe that I could not get better. I am sure they had a good laugh at me after I left. I did not care, but they lost my confidence right then and there. I knew I was on my own, and I did a damn good job of moving on, rebuilding my tree, many times over, and I only wish I could tell them now what I have done with my life, in spite of their not believing that I would ever even walk again, be able to learn again, etc. You are my hero, Dr. Leaf.

I watched the interview of Dr. Leaf by Lewis Howes, yesterday, and then this one today. Yesterday was the first time I ever heard about her. I found her brilliant, and understood lots of how my mind works, and how it differs from the brain. Absolutely incredible. Kudos to Lewis Howes as an interviewer, whose style was extremely humble, with brilliant open ended questions, and without push backs, "editing", "teaching", "reinterpretations" whatsover, allowing her to completely shine on her own.

As a PhD in Pharmacy candidate & molecular biologist, I define identity as a combination of your micro habits & experiences that shaped your thoughts and choices in life plus a combination of how your genes within your cells process genetic information which is very unique from each other. I believe in neuroplasticity which is a big factor why we are capable of learning new skills and habits which shape our identitywhich is also plastic wherein we can change it the way we want it by changing our mindset.

Dr Leaf reminds me of the process I go through in Buddhist meditation: aware of your thoughts and observe the thoughts following it until it’s gone, no judgment or trying to get rid of it. But the same thoughts are always there in the next meditation.
So, I’ll try this process of 5 steps to actively manage and change my mind. She is good, talking a bit fast but I understand her quite well.

If you think that world is bad and sit in a room with all the windows closed, you are the one deprived of out side light and beauty including various human behaviours. To keep away our meseries ,we have to come out in the nature and expose ourselves to beauty of the world.

This is not really about aging but about learning and changing your thought process. Great scientific info we can all use to change habits, improve our mental health, etc.!!

  • @A8.Z
    @A8.Z 4 года назад +6

I experienced depression and anxiety and during that time, I define it as a mental illness because it is what is taught by society but few months ago I start defining it as a phenomenon wherein our brain gives us a signal to gradually change our mindset, micro-habits, choices and goals because the old ones do not serve your purpose in relation to the current situation. With the fast changing world due to growth in technology, human as we are naturally & scientifically will experience this phenomenon because we need to be open to change to cope up with how the modern world works today. We are living in the future and many will experience mental rebooting and can be in a form of depressionand anxiety therefore we need to adapt to it through mindful living. Choose what information you really need and not just ingest whatever the artificial intelligence through smart phones are suggesting you. As humans, we have the responsibility to educate ourselves & others on how to balance the energy between human intelligence and artificial intelligence.

I feel: her delivery is a constant rapid pace which is tiring to listen to. But I CHOOSE: to try to gain something from this interview, so i repeated sections and kept an open mind that i could get something of value from this. Thought, felt, chose. Haven't decided whether I have gotten anything of value yet. Seems like obvious observations so far. But will start mind mgmt section later & resume this interview later.

Great topic just from the kick start about identity. I am from Barcelona, Spain, but i have always been more comfortable around foreigners. I was sent to London and Dublin every summer with a host family to learn English since i was 15 years old. Back home, i would help foreigners getting lost in the city so i could practise English (at that time not so many people spoke English in my city). I always had foreign friends and then travelled for a year to Taiwan when i fell in love with Asia so after several years my company transferred me to Shanghai where i have been happily living for soon 6 years. When i go to Spain everybody asks me when i will go back for good, but i dont see myself going back ever. I am so happy being constantly out of my cmfort zone here. In china everything is so different and i have to keep so open minded and learning so many new skills to adapt and become tolerant. I do not feel i have roots in Spain which is crazy for some people because i am Spanish, but even when i count in my mind, i count in English and I dream in English. When im back home everybody thinks im a foreigner for my strange accent and because im pretty fair skin...anyways, just in Xmas i got a birth chart as a gift and guess what it said: she is happy living abroad. It stroke me. I do feel Shanghai is my home and despite i adore Barcelona and my family is there, i cannot see myself leaving Chins. Maybe my ancestors were Asian 😜

For me, since learning in my youth the impact of my interpretations (what you're calling "choose" in the think, feel, choose), the question I approach life with has always been: How do I choose to relate to this? I've taught my children this: You can't change what has happened, but how you choose to interpret it (that is the meaning you choose to give it for you) can change everything about your experience.
I have come to consider Self not as my thoughts, but as Perspective. Ultimately, everything else is manipulable. Perception can be pointed on a vector, it can travel through mental landscapes and be biased, but perceiving is the constant, and the only thing I relate with Self. How I choose to point and filter that perception into a perspective...that is me.
I am reminded of something fundamental that I read long ago: "Truth is not found in the thing observed, or in the observer, but between them". I'm sure I'm paraphrasing. I wish I could remember the source.

Thank you for this amazing video. Since I was 13 years old I write a diary/journal/free writing and I value writing on a paper . I remember also making a vision board when I was 12 years old onwhat I want I want to happen in my life at age 30 and it all happened. My diary/journaling reminds me always of my goal. After a my depression and anxiety, I create a new vision board which I want to reach for another 20 years. Now I understand the scientific explanation of how writing /journaling really helps.

I love her! Great interview with plenty of information! i noticed Tom Cutting abit into it while she was talking! But then a realized that In my experience with this interview it was sort of a break to reflect on the Information that she's giving! being that she talks fast! My mind unconsciously shut off without me know but the "breaks" brought me back on track! saying this again! one of the best people you have had on the show for me.

Proverbs 23:7 “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” A literal translation of the Hebrew is: “as anyone estimates themselves, that is what they become.
As a Christian, I began to confess, out loud, “I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me, yes I am ready for anything and equal to everything thru Christ who infuses me with inner strength.” It changed everything. The key to the Power of God is “The renewed mind.”
Everything Dr. Leaf is teaching is proving the Word of God to be true. Thank you.

Dear Mr Bilyeu and Dr Leaf, Thank you Mr Bilyeu for your brilliant way to breakdown concepts into understandable soundbites that everyone can understand. Thank you Dr Leaf for your interesting theories, but I am bailing out at 13: 23 because you talk so fast that I cannot follow the logic of your ideas, although I know you have a lot of good things to tell us. You have to realize that Mr Bilyeu's show is reaching an international audience so you have to dial down the speed of delivery a bit so those of us across the world can tune in to your message.

Being able to control biological age is just a by product of mind management, being able to manage your mind has huge benefits for humans and hence I think the title of this video does not do justice to the topic. She explained wonderfully how mind works and while you understand it at an intellectual level when she explains it so clearly, the real change can happen only when you practice it in real life and the one method I found super useful is Vipassana, try going for 11 day silence retreat at Vipassana center (mindfulness as taught by Gautam Buddha 2500 years back) and then S.N. Goenka in recent times, super helpful technique that has practical benefits in real life.

You live 2 lives - one externally and one internally. The inner life needs time, reflection, self-compassion and self-care. Our fear of what we will find on the inside makes our myriad defence mechanisms so much easier to stomach, and so we fail to experience our humanity. It takes great courage to be with ourselves.

Excellent video. I found it interesting Tom that you connected with the character who was able to recognize that there were others around him that were smarter and he didn't quite match or level up to that. People have different types of intelligences. My husband would say my intellectual intelligence is far above what he understands, however he is one of the most social and emotionally intelligent people I've ever met. I've always thought you were a pretty smart guy. You have an intelligent way of being present and listening to the conversation or information being presented, and then go off script and be able to ask pertinent questions in the moment, which is one of the things I appreciate about your show. You're asking questions that is I'm listening to information I myself am having. Great job
